Following the development of the hatchery tool, different triploidy induction techniques have been tried out in vitro. The method using cytochalasin B was selected and successfully applied to cupped oysters, Crassostrea gigas and especially to clams, Ruditapes philippinarum. Larval survival rates were lower than control rates. On the other hand, larvae's growth speed was comparable. These methods will now be used to produce significant test populations which will then be cultivated in French coastal waters. |

Managing the water resource finds a special dimension on the coastal strip. This resource is not shared between the different users according to the classical schemes of catchment areas, linking quality and quantity. The measure of a river water flow turns into currents in the marine field and the freshwater volumes turn into salinity units illustrating the fresh water / salt water mix. As a consequence, in a participative management approach as recommended by the GIZC (Integrated Management of the Coastal Zone) procedures, it seems fundamental that the actors from the terrestrial and marine worlds and their interfaces share their perceptions in order to improve the quality of the management scenarios. This shared perception of the catchment area and... |

The different methods of estimating the trophic capacity of ecosystems cultivated by oyster farming and mussel farming are introduced by ascending order of complexity. Thus, production yields make it possible to monitor whether the size of the farmed stock is being successfully matched with the availability of food. Moreover, the study of annual production farmed stocks has made it possible to create comprehensive dynamic models that show the maximum annual production that a given ecosystem can support. These last two approaches assume the environment to be constant. The study of trophic links that can simulate growth performance of molluscs can be classified according to two criteria, (i) their level of complexity in combining biology and physics, (ii)... |
